History—Age Thirteen
- The first year that Vera remembers celebrating New Year's Eve is when she's eleven and she runs outside in the snow to yell "Happy New Year!" and Charlie yells it back.
- The next year, Vera's mom insists that they celebrate as a family. Vera and her dad don't know that it's the last New Year's Eve she'll be spending with them.
- When she's thirteen, Vera goes with Charlie to a party where everyone's making out, but they end up leaving because they don't want to be there.
- Vera tells him that her dad says that boys are only after one thing, and that she should wait until after college before she even considers dating.
- Then Charlie leans over without warning and kisses her. It feels good, but Vera eventually pulls away and asks him why he did that.
- Charlie just says that he thought they could both use the practice.
