Please Ignore Vera Dietz Part 5, Chapter 3 Summary

A Brief Word From Ken Dietz (Vera's Proud Dad)

  • Ken Dietz talks about his marriage to his wife, Sindy. They found out they were pregnant and went to her parents, who were horrified that Ken intended to take care of his family on a salary of less than $800 a month.
  • He told them that they were going to live with his mother, and that's exactly what they did… until she found out that Sindy was pregnant and kicked them out.
  • After that, they lived in gross little apartments. Sindy took a job at the strip club to help with rent payments, and Ken eventually quit drinking.
  • When Vera turned one, Sindy took another job at the diner. Ken came in one day and saw all these guys flirting with her and leering, and he realized that he didn't want to be a loser who couldn't provide for his family anymore.
  • After that, he went back to community college and got his CPA license. Sindy told him that he went from being an alcoholic to a workaholic, though, and that he wasn't around for them anymore.
  • Instead of opening up emotionally, he shut himself off because he thought that would keep him safe. And he sees that same instinct in Vera when she tries to lock away what happened with Charlie.
  • He wants to tell Vera that there's no use to walling yourself in, that it doesn't help you heal in any way.
