Character Analysis
If there's a more perfect best friend and boyfriend than Jason, we don't want to know about it. He and Deanna have been friends since childhood, but although she's starting to think of him as more than a friend, he doesn't see her that way. Still, he and Darren are the two guys in her life who continue to pay attention to her post-Tommy, even though neither can be completely hers because they both have girlfriends.
Lee is Jason's girlfriend, and he's pretty darn smitten. He buys her her favorite cookie at Mrs. Field's, and he gives her his beloved Metallica hoodie—he's always there to comfort Deanna, but his heart belongs to Lee.
One issue with Jason, however, is that he's a bit of a slacker. When Deanna tells him she's gotten a job, Jason says, "I should get a job. On the other hand, maybe I should spend all summer sleeping and watching TV. Yeah, that sounds good" (3.161). Perhaps he's not actually the greatest catch in the world, but he might well be the greatest catch in Pacifica.
