Deanna's best girlfriend—Lee—moved to Pacifica from San Francisco during their sophomore year. Because she was the only one in school who hadn't heard some version of the Deanna-is-a-"slut" story, she wasn't afraid to be Deanna's friend.
The trouble is, of course, that Deanna told Jason how awesome Lee was, and Jason saw it too. Now Lee's both Jason's girlfriend and the nice girl Deanna knows she can never be post-Tommy—Lee's a virgin and a Christian. Deanna can't handle how perfect Lee is. If Stacy represents what Deanna could have become, Lee represents what Deanna could have stayed.
