Character Analysis
Stacy is the mother of Darren's child, and was once a popular, tough girl at Terra Nova. She does her best to raise her daughter, April, while living in the Lamberts' basement and working at Safeway. And though she has a longing for her old life one weekend and runs off to hang out with her old friend Corvette Kim, she promptly decides to return to Darren and April (and, unfortunately, to Deanna's dad).
Stacy makes Story of a Girl even more of a cautionary tale than it already is because she represents what could have become of Deanna. Take this scene in the Lamberts' basement when Stacy's trying to get ready for work:
"Dammit, I'm leaking. Again." She changed her shirt and looked at me. "I hope you know how lucky you are that Tommy didn't get you pregnant." (2.37)
We see that there is more at stake than reputations when it comes to sex—whole bodies and lives can permanently change. So though things have been hard for Deanna since she lost her virginity to Tommy, they definitely could've been worse. Way worse.
