- Tristram begins to make his way south, but has very little money, and not a lot of access to food.
- Near a bus terminal nearby, Tristram finds an outreach center giving out free meals. He lines up with the others, and eventually sits down with a small bowl of stew.
- As Tristram and the others eat, a man comes around with a clipboard and a bag of cash, dispensing "loans" from the government.
- Tristram takes a three-guinea loan from the man with the clipboard, and adds his signature to a piece of paper. He's quickly ushered out into an adjoining room, where he's shocked to learn that he's just been tricked into joining the army. Gotcha!
