The Wanting Seed Part 1, Chapter 5 Summary

  • At the Ministry of Infertility, Beatrice-Joanna waits in line to file Roger's death certificate. Children's deaths are compensated by the state, with a small "condolence" sum.
  • As she stands in line, Beatrice-Joanna listens to other women in the room talk about the "accidental" deaths of their children. No one in England is punished for infanticide.
  • After collecting her "condolence" money, Beatrice-Joanna waits around to see if her lover, Derek, will appear. He does, and she tells him that Roger has died.
  • Derek tells Beatrice-Joanna that he'll meet her at her apartment in about an hour.
