The Wanting Seed Part 4, Chapter 6 Summary

  • As Tristram moves from town to town, he witnesses lots of Dionysian revels like the one in Lichfield. In Nantwich, he sees a full-on fair, complete with gaming stalls, sausages for sale, and racy theatre shows.
  • Tristram pays to see a comedy called The Unfortunate Father. The play itself is hilarious, but Tristram is even more pleased by the thought that art has been "revived" again in England, after generations of nothing but didactic, propagandist television (4.6.2).
  • Tristram also learns that some Nantwich folks are producing a newspaper—another archaic medium that he's never seen before, except in history books.
