- Shonny and Mavis are visited by Father Shackel, who used to minister in their local area. Father Shackel tells them that the entire hierarchy of the Catholic Church is now back in action: "archbishops, bishops, the lot" (3.8.11). The Pope has taken his place again in Rome, and priests are practicing openly.
- Before Father Shackel leaves, Dymphna and Llewelyn run in to tell the adults that the chickens are laying again, and Bessie, the family's dying pig, seems to have recovered her health.
