- In Chester, Tristram eats a lunch prepared by the Chester Ladies' Fecundity Association. The bargain seems to be a meal for a roll in the hay.
- As he moves through the town, Tristram sees more evidence of a renewed army presence. Now that the repressive state police have mostly vanished (many of them eaten), local villagers seem to be welcoming the good old army boys.
- Tristram hitches a ride with an army lorry. As they drive, the lorry driver tells Tristram that there's sure to be a war soon.
- Tristram isn't convinced: there hasn't been a war on Earth for generations.
