Flora and Ulysses Chapter 33 Summary

Does Rabies Itch?

  • Flora notices Ulysses's head is bleeding, but she remembers reading in Terrible Things Can Happen to You! that there's always a bunch of blood when it comes to head wounds, so she tells her dad not to worry as she rushes over to Ulysses.
  • As she dabs the blood from his head, she gets a sense of déjà vu—this is exactly how she met Ulysses in the first place: kneeling over him after an accident.
  • Ernie the cook says he's going to call the cops since you can't bring a squirrel into a restaurant and Flora tripped him, but Rita tells him not to bother. They should be calling a doctor of some kind, since she's definitely got rabies from the squirrel—her stomach even itches.
  • Flora's dad points out that an itchy tummy isn't even a symptom of rabies, and then he tells Flora to grab the squirrel and run, before anything else can happen.
  • Flora does as her dad says, and the two of them make a break for it.
  • While they're running off, Flora notices her dad cracking up. This is hilarious to him for some reason.
