Flora and Ulysses Chapter 43 Summary

Treacle

  • As Flora and Ulysses walk inside the house, they see her mom's lamp, waiting for them.
  • Flora calls out to her mom, and hears her talking to someone named William.
  • Uh-oh… Flora hopes it isn't William Spiver, but that's the only William that she knows.
  • Flora makes herself a giant ear again, which is what she calls it when she listens in to someone else's conversation.
  • She overhears William helping her mom with one of her romance novels; they talk over whether she should use the word eons or eternity, trying to decide which is more poetic.
  • Flora thinks this whole thing is pathetic, though, and she asks Ulysses whether he thinks the writing is good, and he shakes his head. Not even close.
  • Flora thinks the next word should be treacle so she opens the door to where her mom and William are working and tells them as much.
