Chapter 1: September 16
- The narrator is writing in her diary, and she has more angst than Holden Caufield.
- Apparently, the love-of-her-life Roger stood her up, and so instead of walking on sunshine after her first date, she's stuck just knowing that the whole school will be talking about her.
- Her mom is nagging her to clean her room, but how can she clean her room when she feels like dying? (No, really… that's what she writes.)
Chapter 2: September 17
- School is awful because she keeps anticipating an embarrassing moment, but one never manifests. Alice is hurt and confused and disappointed in her friends and family.
Chapter 3: September 19
- It's her Dad's birthday. Not much more to say.
Chapter 4: September 20
- It's her fifteenth birthday, and once again she doesn't have much to say about anything. Literally. The one sentence in this chapter is: "It's my birthday. I'm 15. Nothing."
Chapter 5: September 25
- Alice hasn't written in a week because nothing of interest has happened (despite it having been both her birthday and her father's… mmkay.)
- Everything—particularly school—is dull and boring.
- She has gained seven pounds and thinks she's beginning to look as just terrible as she feels.
Chapter 6: September 30
- In a major mood reversal, our narrator is thrilled that her family is moving because her father was offered a position as the Dean of Political Science in a different city. She's suddenly optimistic about everything being better there (call it a bad case of Grass-is-Greener Syndrome).
- She pledges to turn her life around for the better once they get to their new home—she's going to exercise and be agreeable and positive and perfect.
- Sounds totally realistic…
Chapter 7: October 10
- Things are looking up. Alice has lost three pounds, she's getting along well with her siblings Tim and Alexandra, and they're all getting ready to move to the new place—where, in case you forgot, she plans on starting over completely fresh.
Chapter 8: October 16
- Alice's parents got an old Spanish-type house, and she can't wait to see it in person. In fact, she can barely contain herself; she's giddy with anticipation.
Chapter 9: October 17
- Our narrator is still feeling pretty positive. She's getting good grades in school (even in Algebra, which is her weak spot), and she's getting along better with her mom.
- She sees Roger in the hall and cold-shoulders him. That'll show him. (We almost feel bad for poor, befuddled Roger. Almost.)
Chapter 10: October 22
- Scott Lossee asked her to the movies.
- She has lost ten pounds, which brings her to one hundred and fifteen total. That's pretty tiny, but she still wants to lose more despite her mom's concern for her wellbeing.
- However, she's already fantasizing about bingeing at the movies and having some fries.
