Chapter 31: May 13
- Alice meets another girl walking home named Beth Baum, and she seems pretty cool.
Chapter 32: May 19
- Alice goes to Beth's house to hang out and she's kind of flummoxed by the fact that they are Jewish.
- Alice finally feels like she has a true friend, though, and admits that Beth is someone she clings to out of desperation and loneliness.
- She wishes she could tell these things to her Mom, but feels like they can't understand each other anymore.
Chapter 33: May 22
- Beth comes over and her family is just as enamored with her as Alice is.
- Alice's mom is going to take them downtown to shop and Alice is practically beside herself with joy.
Chapter 34: May 24
- Alice is still a smitten kitten with her new friend Beth.
- They talk a lot about religion, and she wishes she knew more about her faith so she could tell Beth about it.
Chapter 35: June 3
- Alice and Beth continue to bond, and today they're talking about sex—especially their virginity. Alice is flabbergasted to learn that (according to Beth's Jewish grandmother) if a girl isn't a virgin on her wedding day, the wedding can be called off. The question the girls have is: How would they prove it?
Chapter 36: June 10
- Now that she's found such a good friend, Alice is dreading the end of the school year instead of anticipating it.
- Beth is going to set her up with "a nice Jewish boy," and Alice is kind of excited about it.
Chapter 37: June 13
- School is out, and Alice is happy, but also sad. Such is life, girl.
Chapter 38: June 15
- Beth fixes Alice up with a boy named Sammy Green, but the date is a disaster. Even though he's super polite to her parents, the minute they're alone, he's all hands. He's so grabby that Alice and Beth end up hiding in the bathroom during the movie. Gross, dude.
Chapter 39: June 18
- Alice is heartbroken: Beth has to go to an all-Jewish camp for six weeks while her parents are in Europe.
- Now she'll go stay with Gran for the summer, but it doesn't seem as appealing as it once did.
Chapter 40: June 23
- Alice says that preparing to separate from Beth is like looking forward to a death.
- She wonders if maybe she likes Beth a little too much… nah, she's just her first really good friend.
