Stephanie

Character Analysis

We know what you're thinking: Isn't being Biggie's baby mama and a U.N. worker a conflict of interest? To put it simply, yep. Stephanie knows she shouldn't get involved with a gang leader when she's in Haiti on behalf of the UN, but she falls in love anyway. The rest is history.

Still, Shorty's initially confused by Stephanie since she's on both sides of the U.N.-Route 9 divide. Pretty soon, he tells us:

She might have wanted to help the Site at the beginning, but she got seduced by Biggie and his gangster lifestyle, and all that went out the window. She may have been UN, but she wasn't much more than a girl, twenty-five at the oldest. Some people like that, they're drawn to the power of guns, even if they say they only want to save people. In many ways, Stephanie shows us just how complex the situation is in Haiti. She's torn between two worlds, but neither one is right. We can tell that she's young, a little naïve, and genuinely wants to help people. She hands out food, gives medical supplies, and even lies to the U.N. to get Route 9 members into the hospital when they need it. But in the end, she goes back to France. The problems in the Site are just too big for one person to solve. She feels defeated in the end, but at least she's still alive (unlike many of Route 9).
