Just Listen Chapter 4 Summary

  • At school Sophie either ignores Annabel or taunts her and calls her names. Annabel feels isolated and starts to become a little intrigued by Owen Armstrong, who sits alone every day, doesn't eat anything for lunch, and always has his headphones in.
  • She recalls what happened to sever her friendship with Clarke. After Annabel met Sophie, they'd all hang out together.
  • One night all the girls were spending the night at Clarke's and were supposed to make pizza and watch movies at home. Instead though, Sophie convinced Annabel to go to the pool (which was closed) at night and hang out with some boys.
  • Annabel knew that Clarke wouldn't want to go but ditched her and went out with Sophie anyway. At the pool she saw a cool older boy and kissed him.
  • Clarke came out to call after Annabel and tell her to come home because she was worried, but Annabel just ignored her and stayed with Sophie. After that, they were never friends again and Annabel got popular. Talk about a Mean Girls moment.
  • When Annabel gets home, there's a message from her agent about the Mooshka go-see and one from her sister Kristen about her latest communications class.
  • Annabel goes and takes a look at a portrait of all three sisters around their mother, as though they're sheltering her. The portrait is hung up in their house, but she's never liked it that much.
  • Her mom comes home and asks Annabel to tell her about what's going on with her. Instead of telling her about how terrible things are with Sophie, Annabel lies and says that a cute boy in her gym class talked to her.
  • The next morning Whitney is in charge of driving Annabel to school—it's an awkward ride, but their parents want Whitney to take on more responsibilities.
  • After school Annabel is coming out to the parking lot to wait for Whitney when she runs into Will Cash.
  • He starts to talk to her even though she tries to get away. After he leaves, Sophie comes up to Annabel and pretty much freaks out—she can't believe that Annabel has the nerve to talk to her boyfriend.
  • As Sophie berates her and makes a scene, Annabel snaps and pushes her. Then she runs across campus and throws up on the grass.
  • Someone comes up to her holding her notes—she must have dropped them earlier.
