- Step one: Steal a body. Sure, he could make one by himself, but he's not really in the right mental state for that, so instead he decides to just take one.
- Our narrator tells us that he works in hell, so he doesn't tell anyone where he's going—his job is to torment the damned, and frankly, he's sick of it.
- Even though "the Boss" (a.k.a. the Devil) scares the pants off of our main guy, Kiriel, he's actually mad at the Creator since he's the guy who set up all these rules in the first place; the Boss is just following them.
- Kiriel chooses his target: an unsuspecting teenager about to get hit by a cement mixer. He knows it's wrong to take a body, but he figures the kid won't miss it now that he's going to die.
- At the last second, Kiriel takes over the guy's body and becomes Shaun.
- All of a sudden, Kiriel can see, smell, and hear—it's sensory overload for the guy since he doesn't get to do any of this as a demon.
- But he can't think about that now. Shaun's friend Bailey is looking at him kind of weirdly and he has to be a convincing Shaun or else people will start to ask questions.
- Bailey asks him if he's okay, so Kiriel tries to remember what these guys say to one another; there were lots of jokes and slang when Kiriel watched them talk to each other.
- He fakes a stomachache and heads home. Kiriel doesn't want Bailey to get suspicious and he wants to explore the world through his new body.
- It's weird to walk, but Kiriel gets the hang of it—humans are better than he's always thought.
