Splendors and Glooms Chapter 2 Summary

Lizzie Rose

  • Poor Lizzie Rose is hungry as she pushes the puppet caravan through the streets with Professor Grisini and the other child who works for the puppet show, Parsefall.
  • She can smell that Parsefall has had something to eat and is glad for him, but she is also upset that he didn't think to share with her because she always shares with him.
  • The name of Grisini's puppet show is "The Phenomenal Professor Grisini and His Venetian Fantoccini" because Grisini is Italian (and therefore a foreigner in London).
  • Lizzie Rose has red hair and great manners for a poor street urchin, which is fitting since her father named her for a queen and her mother named her for a flower. She talks like a young lady, unlike Parsefall, who's pretty rough around the edges.
  • However, Parsefall happens to be very good with the puppets, while Lizzie Rose mostly plays music for the shows. He's selfish, rude, and dirty, but Lizzie Rose loves him like a little brother because he's all she has.
  • They get to the house where Clara lives, and Lizzie Rose is certain they're going to be thrown out—there's no way some rich family is asking them to perform for a party.
  • But nonetheless, Grisini walks up the stairs, and the children are left to carry everything up, struggling as they go along.
