The Bottle Imp
- Cassandra wakes up confused, angry, and clutching her phoenix-stone to defend it. Then, she comes to her senses and realizes that Parsefall is in her room to steal the stone—just like she wanted.
- She's so irritated with herself for stopping him that she wants to scream, but instead, she lowers her voice and tells Parsefall that it's OK; she didn't mean to yell at him.
- Madama decides to give Parsefall an out by pretending that she thinks he's here to pick out his Christmas presents.
- She offers him some wine and then lets him choose from her belongings. Parsefall is hesitant but ends up grabbing a pistol.
- He also shows her everything else that he picked out from the house, including silver candlesticks, gems, handkerchiefs, and a rosary. The boy has really gone to town plundering her home.
- Madama assures him that she will not call the police because of the things that he took. Then, she shows him a trick using the phoenix-stone: She takes two stuffed hummingbirds and makes them move again, as though they're coming back to life.
- Parsefall is intrigued and reaches out to touch the phoenix-stone but immediately jerks back his hand. He asks her if it's a trick and whether he'll be trapped forever if he touches the thing, then he leaves the room.
