The Confession Resumed
- Back at Strachan's Ghyll, Cassandra can't stop crying and dreaming about terrible things—like Marguerite disappearing and a monkey staring down at her. She wants to apologize to the children, who are being so nice to her, but she can't.
- When she finally wakes up again, Lizzie Rose is sitting by her bedside and taking a brass monkey away from her table because Cassandra has been yelling in her sleep about it.
- Ruby comes over to comfort her, and Cassandra falls asleep while petting the sweet animal.
- When she wakes up again, Lizzie Rose asks if she needs anything and says that they're going to send for the doctor today. Cassandra tells her that she can leave Strachan's Ghyll to the children, but Lizzie says it's unnecessary.
- Cassandra decides to finish her story about her friend Marguerite and how she stole her birthday present—the same phoenix-stone that belonged to Marguerite's dead mother.
- Marguerite never found out who took it and never would have suspected Cassandra, who was her best friend in the whole wide world.
- After they stopped attending the same school, Cassandra drifted away from Marguerite, though her friend kept sending her letters. And then, before Marguerite died, she sent Cassandra the portrait that Lizzie Rose found in the library.
- Lizzie Rose tells Cassandra that she must have loved Marguerite very much, and Cassandra admits that she doesn't know if she did. Then, she starts to cry again, and Ruby comes up to lick away all of her tears.
