Splendors and Glooms Chapter 45 Summary

The Black Place

  • To show Parsefall the memory, Madama first needs him to go to sleep, so she instructs him to get ready for bed and go to sleep already.
  • Then, as he falls into a dream, he hears Clara's voice saying that she'll be there with him, too; she'll stay with him during this unpleasant memory.
  • When he starts to dream, he sees a memory of himself being turned into a puppet and Grisini shaving off one of the boy's fingers in order to show him that he cannot disobey the magician.
  • Parsefall is horrified and hears Clara yelling at him to wake up so he can escape from watching this terrible scene.
  • He wakes up screaming and sees Lizzie Rose at his side, holding him tight and trying to comfort him. Parsefall says he's going to kill Grisini now that he knows what the man did.
  • Parsefall also says that he will steal the phoenix-stone so that he will have magical powers—and then he can turn Grisini into a puppet and file off all of his fingers and limbs, one by one. How gruesome.
