Splendors and Glooms Chapter 24 Summary

The Legacy

  • Mrs. Pinchbeck's horrid stepson Fitzmorris is staying with them, so Lizzie Rose has to work on sewing his shirt.
  • Lizzie Rose hates Fitzmorris because he's annoying and because he's taken an odd interest in her. Double ew. He keeps trying to kiss her even when she pushes him away—so totally not cool—and he dresses in ugly clothes.
  • She grabs Parsefall's coat to mend next and sees an envelope inside. It's a letter addressed to Grisini that's marked urgent; Lizzie Rose opens it before she can stop herself.
  • Inside is a letter from a woman named Cassandra Sagredo, who claims she is dying and would like to leave her fortune to Grisini and his orphan children.
  • Lizzie Rose is totally shocked—is there really some rich old woman who wants to give money to her and Parsefall? There's even a five-pound note inside the envelope.
  • While she's thinking about what to do, she hears the door open and the sound of Fitzmorris' terrible footsteps on the stairs. She tries to hide with Ruby, hoping he'll go away before he notices her.
