Château-Renaud represents the "aristocracy of the sword" which de Villefort mentions at the very beginning of the book. Saved by Maximilian Morrel during a military campaign in Africa, he is responsible for introducing the young soldier to the aristocratic circle that includes Albert de Morcerf and Franz d'Epinay.
