- He tells Shin about climbing the water: "'I was standing on God's head'" (12.12). Shin is upset. And when he hears Jason climbed with Henry, Shin is doubly upset—he's really hurt that Jason went without him.
- When Shin asks why Jason didn't called him to go along, Jason decides to lie. "I am going to lie to Shin because I could never tell him what a pathetic nerd he looks like to a guy like Henry Stagg. Even though he knows. But he will never hear it from me" (12.24). The lie is that Henry would only show him how to climb the tower if he came alone.
- Shin cries. Jason feels impatient and awful at the same time; he apologizes and tells Shin he knows how to climb up the tower now.
- Shin says he wants to go that night. Jason says he'll come by at midnight. He takes off with the wagon, deciding to wait to tell Shin that Henry is the new Chutengodian High Priest.
- Jason is a sweaty mess after mowing the lawn, so he downs a carton of orange juice—which alarms his mother who thinks he may have diabetes. She tells him Magda called.
