- At the tower, Jason sees the same ladder Shin used to get up on his roof. Shin has done it: he has climbed the tower. Jason is both angry and proud.
- Thunder, lightning, rain, and wind are picking up—Jason yells for Shin, but can't be heard over the storm.
- So Jason climbs. Shin is on the dome, arms wrapped around the pole with the blinking aviation light. Jason tries to get him to climb down, but Shin insists they go inside instead, that they'll be safe in the water. Jason saws off the lock and they climb inside. A thunderclap is "so loud and close [he] can feel it vibrate the shell of the tank" (28.52). He shoves Shin off the platform into the water.
