Character Analysis
Charlie's new group of friends is known as the Detentionheads because they're all a bunch of teenage delinquents who are in, well, detention all the time. Charlie likes his new friends because they're exciting, but Vera sees them for what they are—a bunch of kids who are up to no good. She says:
He was getting detention again—weekly—for smoking and other rebellious acts, and hanging out full-time with the Detentionheads when he wasn't busy becoming his father. (4.3.2)
In the end, the Detentionheads aren't such good friends to Charlie at all. Jenny's the one who is responsible for his death, and the other Detentionheads hardly care about the circumstances of his death. Vera is the one who ends up clearing his name because she's a true friend.
