Character Analysis
Colonel Vosch is the base commander at Camp Haven, and is the head honcho in the humans' war against the aliens. Or at least that's who he says he is.
He's actually an evil alien trying to destroy the last dregs of humanity. The more you know, eh?
As readers, it takes a while to figure out Vosch's true identity. Early in the book, we see him murder Cassie's dad, which strongly suggests that he's an alien wearing a human disguise… or at least a total sociopath. Later, though, we hear him tell Ben how bad he feels about having to kill a bunch of people for a mission. He's pretty convincing, though we get the impression that Ben Parish is supposed to buy the story more than we are.
The thing to know about Vosch is that he's one frosty son of a gun; even his eyes are "cold and blue as a mountain lake" (30.16). Also, for some reason he takes a special interest in Ben Parish, who thinks Vosch is his "brother in vengeance" (52.6). (He's not. Vosch's an alien. We promise.)
We're not really sure what, if anything, to make of that. Is Ben some sort of Chosen One, like Cassie seems to be? It might come up in Books Two or Three… but then again, it might not.
