Flora and Ulysses Chapter 30 Summary

Sunny-Side Up!

  • Ulysses is scared out of his mind.
  • He tried to tell himself to remain calm, but the lady with the big hair and the monstrous face was after him. Why else would she poke a pointy object in his box?
  • He looks at her nametag and thinks her name—Rita—is creepy too.
  • Then she screams, so now he's totally freaked out.
  • Thinking quickly, Ulysses decides to jump into her hair, since it's the only place close by where he can escape her torturous pencil.
  • Everyone's confused about what's happening as Rita keeps swatting at her hair to try to get Ulysses, while he just keeps jumping around in it so he doesn't get caught.
  • One person says her face is on fire; another thinks something is in her hair.
  • Rita screams for help, but Ulysses thinks he's the one who needs help—he's the one stuck in a crazy lady's giant hair, after all.
  • Of course Ulysses starts thinking about food. He got a glimpse of the menu, and he saw all kinds of donuts on there—chocolate, powered, jelly—and he's never had a donut before.
  • He also saw eggs of all kinds—scrambled, poached, sunny-side up, and such. Everything looks delicious.
  • Besides, he just loves the idea of something being "sunny-side up." It sounds so magical and warm.
  • Back to reality, Rita is still screaming, and Ulysses doesn't know what to do.
  • Then he hears Flora's voice, telling him to remember who he is, and with that, Ulysses lets go of Rita's hair and leaps off, into the air.
