Flora and Ulysses Chapter 36 Summary

Surprise. Anger. Joy.

  • Flora looks around the apartments in her dad's building and sees one with a sign: "RESIDING WITHIN: THE DR.'S MEESCHAM!"
  • At first she wonders what the apostrophe is doing there with the DR but then she moves on to attacking the exclamation point—clearly this so-called doc doesn't know that exclamation points are for surprise, anger, and joy.
  • Flora wouldn't trust this doctor to write an essay, but that doesn't mean he or she can't help Ulysses right now.
  • She tells her dad she's going to see Dr. Meescham, and he thinks it's a great idea.
  • When she knocks on the door, an old lady answers the door, saying, "'At last, […] I'm so glad to see your face.'"
  • Uh… what? Flora's confused because she's never met the lady.
  • Even so, she's got a medical emergency, so she asks if the lady can help her.
  • Dr. Meescham says she's been waiting a long time, and already knows Flora's name; she even calls her "beloved."
  • Me? Flora says, before going inside.
