Flora and Ulysses Chapter 48 Summary

Banished

  • William asks if Flora's still around after the whole commotion about where she should live, and Flora lets him know she is indeed still around, even if her mom wishes she weren't.
  • William says he knows how Flora feels, but she's pretty certain he does not.
  • Then he tells her his own mom banished him from her house; this is how he came to stay with his great aunt Tootie in the first place.
  • His dad died and then he had an "incident" with his mom's new husband, Tyrone.
  • William explains that his dad was a smart guy with tiny feet—okay—and just like his dad, William is intelligent and has small feet, too.
  • But his mom's new husband wanted to call him Billy instead of William, and that's simply not his name. He got super ticked about it and told Tyrone a bunch of times, but the jerk didn't care, so one thing led to another, and he was banished.
  • Flora guesses there's more to the story, but when she asks about it, William doesn't want to give up anything else.
  • She feels bad for the guy, and she even thinks she might miss William if he went away now. He seems to feel the same way, because he tells her he came over to her place because he missed her. Aw.
  • Then he asks her if she smells smoke. Uh-oh. Flora doesn't think she can handle a fire right now.
