City of Beasts
- Mihai and Esmé land in Tajbel, a kingdom with an otherworldly feeling, which makes sense since it's the Druj Queen's kingdom. The place is kind of in ruins, though, and no one seems to live there.
- As they cross the bridge, a beast tries to grab at them but Mihai swings his blade at them. They don't seem to be that terrified, though, since they're all starving to death. They just want to eat their newest prey.
- Mihai grabs at Esmé and starts whispering some Druj magic until they float through the air and away from the beasts. Well that's a useful trick for perilous situations.
- He takes her up to the castle, and when she sees the iron cage, it stirs another memory in Esmé—one of seeing red hair spilling out between the bars.
- Mihai then takes her into a chapel where the walls are lined with eyelids and asks her if she remembers this place at all. As she thinks, one of the eyelids opens. Because that's not creepy at all…
- He tells her that this is the Tabernacle of Spies. The Druj Queen collected eyeballs from all over the place so that she could keep an eye on all corners of the world as the owners of the eyes—animals and humans alike—move around. A lot of the eyes aren't working anymore, though, because the spies are dead.
- The beasts start banging on the door and Esmé freaks out, but Mihai tells her that they can't get to them. She tells him that she wants to go home and demands to know what he wants from her.
- But then she looks into a mirror and sees the Druj Queen staring back at her.
- He tells her that the Druj Queen left her own body fourteen years ago—and Esmé realizes that looking at the Druj Queen feels like looking at herself in the mirror.
