How It All Goes Down
Same Day
- Raisa is almost done with work for the day. Although she's a teacher, her days are spent teaching students how to rat each other out, because that's just what teachers were forced to teach Soviet children.
- Raisa's only friend at the school is Ivan Zhukov, a literature teacher. Ivan is a bit of a dissident: he even once lent her "an illegal translation of For Whom the Bell Tolls" (2.10.9).
- Unbeknownst to Raisa, Leo is watching from across the street. In fact, Leo once had Raisa trailed a few years ago because he thought she was cheating on him. She wasn't.
- Leo follows Raisa and Ivan to the train station. Although she almost spots him, Leo manages to slip into the same train car.
- As he does, however, Leo notices that "a fellow [...] State Security operative" has just entered the train (2.10.21). Looks like Raisa isn't the only one being followed—this guy is trailing him.
- To Leo's surprise, Raisa gets off the train with Ivan. Luckily, the second agent doesn't notice, and Leo stays on the train as if he's heading home, finally shaking the agent at his next transfer.
