How It All Goes Down
17 February
- Leo abruptly leaves after the interrogation, claiming sickness. Suspicious after Leo's fight with Vasili, his bosses send Doctor Zarubin to his home to ensure that the story is true.
- Zarubin is met at the door by Raisa, Leo's wife. Raisa is beautiful, and Zarubin has a notorious "weakness for beauty"—not the best combo in the world (2.8.5).
- Raisa makes Zarubin a cup of tea. Zarubin waits as long as possible, shamelessly hitting on Raisa like a total creepazoid.
- Finally, Zarubin examines Leo—luckily, Leo is indeed sick. His tests complete, Zarubin injects Leo with a "tonic [...] to help him sleep" (2.8.43).
- Once they leave the bedroom, Zarubin demands that Raisa sleep with him. If she doesn't, Zarubin will tell MGB officials that Leo was faking his illness, which would surely end in his execution
- In a flash, Raisa grabs a knife and puts it to Zarubin's throat. The doctor inches out the door, leaving Raisa to wonder if she made the right call.
- Meanwhile, Leo is having one trippy dream. He sees every person he's ever arrested, he's transported back to his wedding day, and then he imagines the sad fate of Mikhail's daughters.
- Suddenly, Leo wakes up, rambling to Raisa about the day they met. Before she can respond, there's a knock at the door—it's Major Kuzmin. This can't be good.
- Luckily, Zarubin was bluffing—Kuzmin only came by to tell Leo he can take off as much time as he wants. He also hands Raisa a bag full of "oranges and lemons" from Doctor Zarubin—the intent behind those is quite clear (2.8.107).
