How It All Goes Down
Same Day
- Leo is back at the train station, hunting clues. His plan is to search a wide area around where the body was found, as the initial investigation was haphazard at best.
- After searching most of the area, Leo hears footsteps approaching. His panic quickly subsides when he realizes that it's just Raisa.
- Raisa is furious, demanding that Leo come home. Leo tells her everything he knows about the murders, saying that "this man's killed before," and he'll kill again (3.23.33). Reluctantly, Raisa agrees to help.
- The couple discovers a pair of footprints leading into the woods and follows them for about thirty minutes. That's when the footsteps abruptly become messy—"desperation could be read on the snow" (3.23.46).
- Then Leo and Raisa see it—another body. This one is male, about fourteen years old. It's a horrifying sight.
- Leo picks up a pinch of dirt from the boy's mouth and examines it. It's not dirt at all—it's bark.
