Chomp Chapter 5 Summary

  • Raven feels underpaid for everything she does for Derek. She thinks he is a lot to deal with, and we totally agree.
  • At Derek's hotel room, Raven's knocks on the door go unanswered, so she walks in the room.
  • When Derek refuses to work with Mickey, calling him a redneck, Raven is quick to remind him that Alice the alligator is perfect.
  • The script tells Derek to swim next to an alligator, and Alice is super tame, which makes her the ideal alligator to go for a dip with.
  • On the way to Mickey's house, Derek complains about filming in a backyard and then brags about planning to jump on Alice.
  • That sounds like a pretty bad idea from where we're sitting—Alice might be tame, but she is still an alligator.
  • Raven says no dice, telling Derek that it's too dangerous and the insurance company won't let him do it. Derek says he will anyway.
  • In another episode, Derek acted like a snake charmer with a rented cobra and nearly got bitten, but the owner stepped in to protect Derek. Then without asking, Derek killed and ate the cobra.
  • Confidently, Raven tells him he cannot do anything bad to Alice. Derek replies, "We shall see…" (5.22). Hmm, this doesn't sound promising for Alice.
  • Later on at the Cray's, Wahoo and Mickey each take care of the animals.
  • Derek emerges from his massive, luxury motor coach (basically a wicked hooked-up bus), and an assistant sprays fake tanning lotion all over his skin while others pig out on donuts.
  • Before shooting the scene, Raven checks to make sure Mickey has a gun ready in case something goes wrong and Alice decides to make a snack out of Derek.
  • The first scene they shoot is with a large snapping turtle.
  • Derek demands to see the inside the turtle's mouth and won't take no for an answer, even though the turtle doesn't want to open wide.
  • To prod the turtle to open up, Mickey gets him a stick and Derek pokes at the turtle.
  • Unamused, the turtle pulls in its head and then, with lightning speed, snaps at the stick, nipping Derek's nose a little. Frightened, Derek tumbles into the water.
  • And then he threatens to fire everyone if they put the incident on YouTube.
  • Next, Mickey brings out Beulah the python and shows Derek the best way to handle her, but Derek doesn't pay any attention.
  • After Wahoo tells him that the snake bites, Derek proceeds to lecture everyone about wild animals… as if he knew anything about them. He tells them not to act scared because animals can smell it.
  • With the camera rolling, Derek grabs Beulah in the worst possible place but she doesn't bite him since she is all drowsy from lunch. We feel you, Beulah—lunch makes Shmoop sleepy too.
  • Derek brings the snake to the ground and shakes her head in an attempt to try to get her to fight him, but she won't.
  • Mickey pounces on Derek and chokes him until Wahoo comes over to help.
  • Everyone else, except for Raven, just laughs.
  • Fed up, Mickey tells Derek he can't use Alice.
  • In a panic, Derek offers him four thousand dollars for a shot with Alice, and Mickey accepts that fee.
