Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory
It would be impossible to talk about Lips Touch: Three Times without at least mentioning Jim Di Bartolo's illustrations. Each story in the book is accompanied by a series of illustrations at the beginning that depict different scenes in the story to come.
All of the illustrations are rendered in black, white, and red—a moody color scheme that adds to the dark nature of the stories. Here are some of sample illustrations from the book:
- Goblins carrying their magical fruit
- Mab being dressed up by the Druj Queen and her handmaidens
These images give us a glimpse of what's to come in each story, piquing our interest and setting the stage. We have a question for you, though: Do the illustrations hinder your ability to envision these tales for yourself? Over to you, Shmoopers.
