Character Analysis
The girls' mother died giving birth to Lily, so she progresses from zero years old to one year old during the course of the story. At first she just sleeps, eats, and cries, but eventually she starts to show some sparks of personality. While Mr. Bradford visits the royal household near the end of the book, Lily can be found "climbing on him and grabbing his nose" (23.23). Hey there, kiddo.
Azalea thinks the name Lily is perfect for her, since she's "Graceful, delicate. The baby reminded her of the white garden lilies that bloomed through the snow. Mother always knew what was just right" (3.32). This is more of a comment about their mom than about Lily, but it shows that Lily's name will probably be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
