Character Analysis
Mr. Penbrook is a "young, rather moist gentleman" (2.101) who is going to dance the Entwine with Azalea at the end of the Yuletide ball, except the ball gets shut down before that can happen. He comes to court Azalea too, and is up-front enough to tell her: "I am quite taken with you, Miss Azalea!" (16.25). His directness is pretty much the only thing he seems to have going for him, though.
Since Azalea's not taken with him, she ditches him in the lilac labyrinth for the afternoon. She realizes: "Unfortunately Mr. Penbrook was the sort of gentleman Mother had told her about. You could poison their horses, steal their pins, set their manors on fire, chop off their fingers, and they would still think you the sweetest little thing" (16.34). Er, we're hoping none of those examples were taken literally at any point.
