- D-503 is haunted by I-330. He doesn't know where she's gone or why she has such a hold on him, but the dude's got it bad.
- He wanders out to find her, but he cannot. He overstays his allotted free time daydreaming, and knows he can't go home. Either he must go to the Medical Bureau immediately, or else turn himself over to the Department of Stern Men with Lobotomy Knives.
- One of said Stern Men—S-4711—shows up and leads him to the Medical Bureau. There, two doctors inform him that he has grown a soul.
- But instead of lobotomizing him, they tell him to go to the Ancient House the next morning. The plot thickens.
