Who is the narrator, can she or he read minds, and, more importantly, can we trust her or him?
First-Person (Central Narrator)
D-503 is our narrator. We see everything from his point of view and never deviate from it. No one else gets to write in his journal, which is supposedly what we're reading. And yet it sometimes seems like he's only peripheral to the action. Sure, he's in charge of the big rocket ship and seems to be a pretty big wheel in the One State, but he's not the center of everything. Important events (like the election) see him acting merely as a witness, while other times he's swept along by events beyond his control. First-person narration shows a surprising amount of flexibility that way, allowing the author to spring surprises on us—and even focus on other characters—without removing us from D-503's eyes.
