  • D-503 confesses that he can't actually tell dreams from reality anymore.
  • He goes on about his day, but feels fundamentally detached for people around him. ("I went downstairs and put my name down in the book for the outgoing Numbers, as everyone did. But I felt I lived separately from everybody; I lived by myself separated by a soft wall which absorbed noises; beyond that wall there was my own world." (18.6)
  • He travels the streets alone in the afternoon, totally aware of how separate he is from the rest of humanity.
  • He comes back home to receive a letter from O-90. She confesses her love for him, and states that she will take his name from her "list" of lovers because she believes that he no longer needs her. It's a little sad.
