- D-503 arrives at work, only to find out that a man without a number was captured there while he was "sick."
- The man was taken to the Operation Department, where "they'll get answers out of him." (15.4)
- Apparently, interrogation involves a Gas Bell pumped with different gases. D-503 is quick to point out how not at all torturous that is.
- He continues to wonder how the heck I-330 got out of the Ancient House without being seen, but determines that he now loves and feels as deeply as she does.("Yes, I love the fog, too. I love everything, and everything appears to me wonderful, new, tense; everything is so good!" (15.7)
- D-503's colleague talks about a new operation, the "surgical removal of fancy." (15.11), and suggests that D-503 ask to receive it.
- They check the Integral and see that it is almost ready to go. D-503 takes the opportunity to have another crisis of identity, this time tinged with feelings of guilt at all the Bad Things He Did.
