June
- June is horrified when she sees Day, even though it's only been a few hours. He looks terrible.
- She sends the guards away so that she's alone with Day, and then she leans down and gives him some water. Despite her best efforts, she can't help but feel sorry for him.
- She also lets him know that his brothers are still alive and that she didn't tell anyone about Tess, so she's still safe.
- Day tells her that he's sorry about what happened to her brother and that he didn't know that he'd died. June has a moment of weakness where she feels like she believes him.
- To distract herself, she asks him where he got the imperfection in his eye, and Day tells her that the Republic injected something in his eye the day of his Trial. That's also when he got his knee injury.
- June tells him that he got a perfect score on his Trial, and that she's the Republic's prodigy with a perfect score too. She realizes that the Republic must have wanted to experiment on him after his Trial because of his score… But why would they do that?
- Day asks June why they took Eden away, and says that he suspects that the Republic is intentionally poisoning people with the plague. He thinks that they want Eden because he has a mutated version of the plague virus.
- June is resistant to the idea, but Day tells her to think about it. How does the Republic always have the exact right vaccines on hand? He also tells her that she's wrong about kids who fail the Trial—they don't go to labor camps. They die.
- June doesn't dare say anything in response, but instead goes over to the soldiers and tells them to take Day down to the hospital wing to get his leg fixed and to get some food and water. Then she leaves without saying goodbye.
