The Sun is Also a Star Chapter 18: The Conductor: An Evangelical History Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • The conductor's wife left him four years ago. She didn't have a reason; she just didn't love him anymore.
  • "He remembers their vows in front of God and everyone. If the person who's meant to love you forever can suddenly stop, then what is there to believe in?" (47)
  • He couldn't hold down a job, couldn't find a place to stay, couldn't fall asleep unless late-night TV was on.
  • One night, he caught a televangelist preaching to a huge congregation of people who all seem happy. The conductor stayed up all night watching the show, and researched Evangelical Christianity the next day.
  • He loves the idea of being born again, freed from sin, and worthy of love.
  • He's so stoked about his newfound faith that he can't help but share his joy with the passengers on his train. Everything that's happened to him, even the bad stuff, has happened for a reason.
