The Sun is Also a Star Chapter 47: Hair: An African-American History Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • In the 1500s, members of African civilizations used their hairstyles to signify all sorts of meanings—tribal backgrounds, wealth, states of mourning, etc.
  • When Africans were captured and forced into slavery, they were shaved in an attempt to dehumanize them.
  • When slavery ended, hair became a source of debate—if you straightened your hair, were you ashamed? If you wore it naturally, were you making a statement?
  • Natasha's mother has always relaxed her own hair, so seeing Natasha wear hers in an Afro feels like a rejection.
  • Natasha just wears it that way because she thinks it looks beautiful.
