- An adult woman comes out and Ella explains that Max is the girl who saved her—and that she was shot in the process.
- The woman offers to call Max's parents, but when Max hesitates, she doesn't press it. (Phew, right?) Instead, she goes to get some medical supplies, since she's a veterinarian. (Okay, more like double phew.)
- The woman cuts off Max's shirt to examine the wound, and frowns when she sees the part where her wings tuck in.
- Even though Max never shows her wings to anyone else, she decides to go ahead and tell the truth. Then she unfurls the wings just a little bit, and both Ella and her mom stare at her in wonder.
- Instead of asking a bunch of questions about it, though, Ella's mom just gets to work caring for the wound. She's so caring that Max starts to cry—no one's ever been like this with her before.
