- After school, Gansey heads back to Adam's house to check on him. Adam doesn't actually live in a house; he lives in a trailer with his parents. He obviously doesn't come from the same affluent background as the rest of his friends.
- When he knocks on the door, Adam's mom answers and tells him right away that Adam is out back. He goes into the carport and finds Adam working on a car. He refuses to come out right away.
- When he does slide out from beneath the car, Gansey sees that a big bruise is spreading over Adam's face. He gets mad and tells Adam that he should move in with him, and that he'll provide for him.
- But Adam is stubborn and has a lot of pride, and so he says that he won't leave unless it's on his own terms—he wants to be his own person, and that means that he can't let Gansey bail him out.
- Gansey starts to leave in a huff, but Adam follows him and says that he's going to go with him to the psychic. He's not going to leave home and live with Gansey, but he wants to go with his friends tonight—even if it means that his dad will be angrier.
