The Raven Boys Theme of Exploration

The friends in The Raven Boys all go on the adventure of a lifetime together to find the place where Glendower is buried. Even with the responsibilities of school, work, and family, the teens find the time to research old Welsh kings, go on long drives (and helicopter rides), and even wake up a magical ley line. Talk about maximizing productivity, right? The story is full of family drama and complicated friendships, but it's also a tale of friends exploring uncharted territory. They go where no one has gone before, and even manage to complete the ley line ritual.

Questions About Exploration

  1. Why does Adam invite Blue to go exploring with the raven boys?
  2. What is the purpose of Gansey's search for Glendower? How is it different than Whelk's?
  3. Why is Maura looking for Blue's father now, after all this time?

Chew on This

Try on an opinion or two, start a debate, or play the devil’s advocate.

Whelk and Gansey are both looking to wake up the ley lines, but they are doing it for completely different reasons. Whelk wants to harness all the power, whereas Gansey is searching out of academic curiosity.

Blue can't help but be drawn into the raven boys' adventures because she's never gotten to be a central part of her family's magical dealings. She wants a chance to be in the middle of it.
