The Raven Boys Theme of Fate and Free Will

Considering Blue has grown up in house full of bona fide psychics, it makes sense that she believes in fate—at least a little bit. In The Raven Boys, she's spent her whole life hearing that if she kisses her true love, he'll die. And Gansey's grown up aware of his own fate, too. He knows that he's meant to find an old Welsh king named Glendower, and he's spent his whole life so far searching. Even with these fates written in stone, though, the characters can still make different choices about their lives. And who knows? Perhaps they'll even be able to alter their futures.

Gansey's obsession with Glendower may seem strange to his friends, but it all comes from a near death experience as a child. Being so close to death and learning that he's fated to find Glendower has set him on his life's path.

Even though Blue knows that she's fated to kill her true love, she still believes that she can prevent his death by avoiding kissing everyone.
