Character Analysis
Our protagonist, Blue Sargent, is both a typical teenage girl and a completely extraordinary teenage girl at the same exact time. She lives in a small town, fights with her mom, and hates going to school (pretty typical, right?), but there are other odd things that set her apart, too…
A Victim of Fate
One of Blue's enduring defining characteristics is the fact that she knows exactly what will happen if she falls in love—and it's not pretty. Blue has a pretty fatalistic view of her love life because she's grown up with a nasty prediction about her future:
Blue had forgotten how many times she'd been told that she would kill her true love. (P.1)
Since Blue knows that her mom and aunts are the real deal when it comes to psychic abilities, she knows that her love life can't end well. This makes it hard for her to live out life like a normal teenager since, after all, dating isn't just fun and games for her—it's an exercise in flirting with death.
The Back-up Battery
Blue isn't often the star of the show. As someone who's grown up in a household full of psychics, she is used to be being in the background… especially because she has none of her own psychic abilities. However, Blue is indispensable to her family and friends because her very presence brings its own power. She may not feel like she's important, but she's extremely useful when it comes to making magical energy stronger:
Maura had once explained that if Blue wasn't there, she couldn't convince them to answer her—the dead couldn't see Maura without Blue's presence.
Blue never grew tired of being particularly needed, but sometimes she wished "needed" felt less like a synonym for "useful." (1.46-47)
Blue sometimes feels like she's just not special… but it's untrue. She's special because her presence brings out the most in magical activity, and because she's able to help her friends find the things that they're looking for (like Gansey's hunt for the ley lines). They wouldn't be able to do it without her.
Awkward Teen Hormones
Despite the morbid predictions about her love life, Blue can't help but feel some burgeoning teenage hormones when she comes into contact with cute boys. This especially becomes a problem with Adam, who makes her break her promise to never ever get close to a boy:
Blue had two rules: Stay away from boys, because they're trouble, and stay away from raven boys, because they're bastards.
But those rules didn't seem to apply to Adam. Fumbling in her pocket, she pulled out a tissue and wrote her name and the phone number for 300 Fox Way on it. (8.29-30)
She gives him her phone number even though it goes against everything that she stands for, and it's because he is just so darn cute. They start to get close, and Blue even wants to kiss him… but she can't. Will she be able to keep away from the dude forever, or will she give into her sexy desires? We're just going to have to pick up the next book in the series to find out.
